Yesterday a friend and patient introduced us to a couple of great services available online that can deliver wholesome and tasty organic foods right to your door at a good price. If I seem to be gushing about either of them, let me be clear that I have no relationship with either company.
The first is called Misfits Market at misfitsmarket.com. I especially love this one. If we look around, we see that nature reveals herself in endless variety. We need only to see that people come in a great variety of sizes, shapes, colors and abilities. In our shallow culture, we only esteem the ones that match our stereotypical view of beauty and talents. If we turn our attention to the realm of fruits and vegetables, we see the same phenomenon. Nature grows her produce in an abundance of shapes, sizes and colors. Yet, when we go to the supermarket, the bins contain piles of nearly identical produce. What happens to the rest? In a way that is even more literal than how we treat people who don’t fit our stereotypical values, they are sorted out and discarded.
Now, we can extend our metaphor. Just as with our throwaway people, the discarded produce is every bit as valuable as the stuff that gets selected for the supermarket. Misfit Market buys up the produce that doesn’t make the grade in terms of appearance and makes it available to the public at a fraction of the cost of its more glamorous counterparts in the stores. This is a win-win, as you get organic food at a great value, and less nutritious food is left to rot for no reason other than its looks. To top it off, the produce is delivered right to your door.
The second find is for those who want delicious healthy food, but don’t have the time and energy to put out three fresh meals a day. This one is called Daily Harvest. It delivers frozen smoothies, soups and “harvest bowls” of produce. I’ve only tried one of the smoothies, but I must say it was very tasty with a nice combination of flavors that blended really well together.
Both services offer options so that you can fine tune your order to your needs. Bon appetit!
